About this coffee

For a good cappuccino, latte, or any other milk-based coffee, it is important that the milk is at the right temperature: neither too hot nor too cold. For a beginner barista, this is a challenge, as you learn by practice and experience. Until then, a milk thermometer is a solution. We recommend always this Motta milk thermometer because of its ease of use and good price-to-quality ratio. You probably won’t need it after a while, so it’s wasteful to spend much money on it, as it costs about the same as a small bag of specialty beans.

We find several things pleasant about this thermometer: its simple, clear design where you can see at a glance if the milk is right (then you are ‘in the green’), and the clip that holds it securely to the milk jug.

Motta milk thermometer, advantages

Clearly readable: The pointer is in the green area, then the milk is at the correct temperature: between 60 and 65 degrees.

Sturdy clip: The adjustable clip keeps the thermometer in place; no rolling and slipping through the milk jug.

Good price-quality ratio: Good quality, does what it’s supposed to do, reasonable price.

Celsius and Fahrenheit: For those who find this pleasant.

Always 'on': Analog, so it can be used directly without setting.

Easy to clean: Clean the metal steel easily with warm water and soap.

How to use the Motta milk thermometer?

Place the thermometer with the clip at the side of the milk jug. Make sure the tip of the steel is just above the bottom of the jug for a precise measurement. This way, you have good sight of the temperature during frothing. After use, clean the steel with warm water and soap. Tip: also read our brewing guide for milk frothing.

Is a Motta milk thermometer something for me?

Especially for a beginner barista, this thermometer is very handy: it helps you to determine the right milk temperature as long as you’re still relying on feel. Combine it with a Motta milk jug for the perfect frothing station.
